Databases

When you create a new item in Parsnips, the complete text, title and keywords of that item are indexed to facilitate rapid searching later. The database created holds the entire text of the item as well as information about what terms appear in the text and where they appear. Because of this, databases can become quite large if they contain several thousand or hundreds of thousands of items.

Parsnips uses only a single database at a time, but the location of the current database can be set via the Preferences panel. In this panel there is a text field to specify the directory to hold the database information. If you specify a new directory and it doesn't already exist, the directory will be created. If a pre-existing directory is specified, it should be one used only for the database information. Other files in the directory could be overwritten by Parsnips.

On Windows and Linux the default database location is in

    <your home directory>\.Parsnips\IndexData

On Mac OS X, it is in

     <your home folder>/Library/Preferences/Parsnips/IndexData

The database format is compatible across all platforms. You can copy the database directory from Windows to Mac and it will work perfectly.

After several hundred or more items have been added or deleted from Parsnips, it is a good idea to choose the Optimize Database command from the File menu. This compacts and reorganizes the data for slightly more efficient searching.
